“230M 750ml bottles were imported into the U.S. in 2023. The chart below compares the carbon footprint of US vs. Chinese-made wine bottles. Reading the bars from left to right demonstrates the reasons why important Chinese glass has a higher carbon footprint. The most recent data suggests that >30% of glass furnaces in China are still coal-powered, and Chinese glass is very unlikely to have more than 20% recycled content. In California, the average recycled content for glass container production was 43%.”
