Attorneys at Stern, Van Vleck & McCarron to Join Downey Brand
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 29, 2012) – With the continued increase in new regulations and legislation targeting agriculture, many farmers, ranchers and industry leaders are seeking specialized counsel to help them plan a path forward to protect their business interests. This is one of the reasons why Downey Brand law firm announced today that it has reached an agreement with the attorneys at Stern, Van Vleck & McCarron to join Sacramento’s largest law firm. The move, expected to be completed by June 1, 2012, will make Dale Stern, Stan Van Vleck and John McCarron partners at Downey Brand.
“We’ve seen the food, wine and ag industries become impacted by so many new regulations over the past several years that many growers, processors and distributors have approached us saying they need access to expertise in water rights, air quality law, and environmental permitting. Our association with Downey Brand will now provide them with a variety of legal, regulatory and lobbying expertise in the areas that are vital to their businesses,” Stern said. “Ag clients, more than ever, need a comprehensive approach to problem-solving and I believe we are best positioned to offer that to our clients as part of Downey Brand.”
Stern, Van Vleck & McCarron, a highly-respected boutique law firm based in Sacramento, principally served the food and agriculture industry and are considered key players in food and agricultural law. They represent a number of the state’s most important food, wine and agricultural trade associations, including the California Association of Winegrape Growers, California Grocers Association, and The California League of Food Processors. Their clients, whose businesses have become increasingly regulated, will be able to draw upon Downey Brand’s environmental and natural resources expertise--long a key strength of Downey Brand.
Downey Brand’s Managing Partner, Kevin O’Brien, believes the Stern, Van Vleck & McCarron team of lawyers are a unique fit for Downey Brand. “Our firm has a long history of working for ag-related interests in the region, and these three new partners will strengthen our capabilities even more. They have done a very impressive job within a highly-specialized industry. I have a lot of respect for the depth of knowledge that they have about the ag industry. We’re excited to bring Dale, Stan and John on board,” O’Brien said.
Others in the ag and food industries have also welcomed the news. "The attorneys at Stern, Van Vleck & McCarron have provided important legal services for the California Grocers Association as outside general counsel for more than 20 years,” said CGA President and CEO Ronald Fong. “Joining Downey Brand will significantly expand the excellent representation that has been provided CGA and allow for an even greater comprehensive offering of services in the years to come."
