Zinfandel Advocates & Producers release Heritage Vineyard Zinfandel at Wilson Family Winery

Zinfandel Advocates & Producers welcomes all to the pre-release party for the 2010 Heritage Vineyard Zinfandel on Saturday, June 23. The celebration takes place at Wilson Family Winery, 1960 Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg (95448, http://www.wilsonwinery.com/pages/location-info). Festivities take place from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. and will include Greek-inspired hors d’oeuvres as well as an assortment of Zinfandels to taste, from the Heritage Vineyard as well as wines from Wilson Artisan Wines (Matrix, Mazzocco, Pezzi King, Soda Rock, deLorimier Winery, Jaxon Keys Winery and Wilson Family). ZAP members are invited to a seated educational seminar from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., conducted by winemaker Diane Wilson and Antoine Favero, winemaker at Mazzocco---they will discuss the uniqueness of the Dry Creek Valley appellation, along with growers from the Valley.

Tickets are $50 for ZAP members (which includes the option of attending the 1 – 2:00 p.m. seminar/tasting) or $28 for the 2 – 5:00 event only. For the public, tickets are $40 (for the 2 – 5:00 event only). Not a member of ZAP? You can attend this event and join and then take advantage of special pricing when you purchase the 2010 Heritage Vineyard Zinfandel.

Attendees will be able to purchase the 2010 Heritage Vineyard wine (at $26/retail, 30% discount for that day---only $18.20). Only a total of 80 cases were produced. The only other time the wine will be available for sale is at ZAP’s Zinfandel Festival, January 31, February 1 and 2, 2013 in San Francisco.
The Heritage Vineyard, located within the UC Davis Viticultural Station in Oakville (Napa Valley), is an unusual and unprecedented collection of Zinfandel selections from historic vines averaging over 80 years of age planted in vineyards all over California. Zinfandel Advocates & Producers has supported research into Zinfandel at the Heritage Vineyard since 1995. Each year a different ZAP winemaker member makes the wine.

“This wine is showing big blackberry and cherry aromas with some hints of clove and cinnamon. Mouth feel is good and looks to be a nicely balanced, fruit forward wine,” winemaker Diane Wilson explains. Grapes for the 2010 ZAP Heritage Vineyard Zinfandel were harvested on September 30, 2010. 1.84 tons were picked early in the morning and delivered in ½ ton picking bins to Wilson Winery. The fruit was de-stemmed and then hand-sorted into 2 small open topped fermenters where the fruit underwent a 6 day cold soak at between 50-55 degrees F. Native yeast was allowed to ferment the grapes, which lasted 16 days and reached maximum temperature of 82 degrees F. During the fermentation the must was hand-punched down 3 times per day. The must was pressed off when dry into a small stainless steel tank where the wine was inoculated with ML bacteria and then went into four barrels where the wine will finish off with secondary fermentation. The wine was barrel aged for approximately 13 months until it was bottled in March 2012.

Wine has been made from The Heritage Vineyard beginning in 1997. 1997 was made by Nils Venge (Saddleback Cellars); 1998 by Robert Biale (Robert Biale Vineyards); 1999 by Matt Cline (Trinitas Cellars); 2000 by Rod Berglund (Joseph Swan Vineyards); 2001 by Joel Peterson (Ravenswood); 2002 by Ehren Jordan (Turley Wine Cellars), 2003 by Paul Draper (Ridge Vineyards), 2004 by Kent Rosenblum (Rosenblum Wine Cellars), 2005 by William Knuttel (Dry Creek Vineyard & Ottimino), 2006 by Jerry Seps (Storybook Mountain Vineyard), 2007 by Joel Peterson (Ravenswood), 2008 by Tom Mackey (St. Francis Winery), 2009 by Pete Seghesio (Seghesio Family Vineyards) and 2011 by Scott Harvey.
