Santa Rosa, Calif., July 19, 2011 — Bennett Valley Cellars launched its inaugural wine in California and New York, the 2009 Bennett Valley Pinot Noir, which showcases the young California American Viticultural Area (AVA) prominently in its branding. The Bennett Valley AVA is located in Sonoma County, nestled between the Sonoma Mountain and Chalk Hill appellations. Officially recognized in 2003, the Bennett Valley AVA has been noted for its Chardonnay, and is rapidly garnering a reputation for Pinot Noir, Syrah, and other popular varietals. Covering just 650 acres of planted grapes, the Bennett Valley appellation is home to over 36 growers.
Emilio Zanin purchased 5 acres in the Bennett Valley in 2006, naming it Marina’s Estate. His son, Luca Zanin, purchased another 40 acres adjacent to Matanzas Creek Winery a few years later, naming it Simpatico Ranch and laying the foundation for Bennett Valley Cellars. The vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With a production of just under 1,800 12/750-ml cases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay per year, Bennett Valley Cellars wines’ classic varietal character and elegance celebrates the fog-cooled growing climate of the Bennett Valley AVA.
Bennett Valley Cellars released its Bennett Valley Cellars 2009 Pinot Noir, Bennett Valley, in late 2010. The wine is distributed in California by VNO Wine Distributor (www.vnowine.com), a division of Villa Italia Imports, based in San Francisco. The winery also makes a Pinot Noir under their second label, Bin 6410, and will be adding Chardonnay under both labels to their portfolio. The Bennett Valley Cellars 2010 Chardonnay along with the Bin 5757 Chardonnay, Bennett Valley, will be released in August, 2011.
Luca Zanin, President of Bennett Valley Cellars, recently founded American Wine Wholesalers in Larchmont, New York. American Wine Wholesalers will distribute Bennett Valley Cellars and Bin 6410 throughout the greater New York city metro area.
The 2009 Bennett Valley Cellars Pinot Noir retails for $38, and received a Silver Medal at the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition. Winemaker Toni Stockhausen has a well-established track record of making fine wines, having worked for Mildarra Blass in Australia, Fosters Wine Group at Windsor Vineyard, and Weibel Family Vineyards and Winery in Mendocino. She sees her job as winemaker to “enhance the fruit characters and hand craft the wines to bring forth the unique vintage and the flavor profile which prevails in each particular growing season.”
