The Hess Collection Donates $20K From 1% For The Planet Sales

To Napa Land Trust & Center For Land-Based Learning

Napa, Calif — The Napa Land Trust and the Napa County Student & Landowner Education and Watershed Stewardship program (SLEWS) have received $10,000 each in grants from The Hess Collection, generated by participation in the 1% For The Planet environmental advocacy program.

1% For the Planet is a growing global movement of companies donating 1% of sales for local environmental programs. The Hess Collection is a long-time member, each year selecting worthy Napa organizations for support.

“We’re pleased this year to be part of a joint focusing of efforts with the Napa Land Trust and the SLEWS program partners,” noted Gary Bulger, President of The Hess Collection. “Preserving, protecting and enhancing the environment is a goal best shared with young people who will be guiding the future.”

Each year Hess sets aside 1% of sales from the Hess Collection Small Block Series of limited-release wines made available exclusively to Hess Collector’s Club members and visitors who purchase the wines at the winery on Mount Veeder. Further contributions are generated during an annual promotion known as Chardonnay Month when the winery suggests that It Is Easy Being Green, letting consumers know that sales of the popular Hess Select and Hess Collection Napa Valley Chardonnays will generate donations for 1% For The Planet.

SLEWS is a program of the Center For Land-Based Learning, in cooperation with the Napa County Resource Conservation District. Annually Napa high school students adopt a habitat restoration project site, helping restore native habitat while also learning about how their efforts affect positive change in the community. Last year, for example, students planted roughly 600 native trees, shrubs and grasses, built and installed a dozen bird boxes, and performed critical maintenance for the plantings to assure their survival. They explored ecology topics ranging from pollination to the geology of Napa, and learned about potential careers and paths of higher learning for ecology and environmental areas of concentration.

The Napa Land Trust is helping to preserve the character of Napa by permanently protecting land. The 380-acre Archer Taylor Preserve is located near the Hess Collection winery, and contains one of the largest Redwood stands in Napa.
