Booth Family Members Buy Historic Bella Oaks Vineyard, Partner With Staglin Family Vineyard For Winemaking

Submitted By: Lewis Perdue, November 21, 2010
Booth Bella Oaks LLC, a partnership between David and Suzanne, and Erin and Chandler Booth, announced today that it had successfully completed the purchase of the historic, 18 acre Bella Oaks Vineyard in Rutherford, CA. Originally planted by Barney and Belle Rhodes in 1973, grapes from this Rutherford Bench vineyard have been exclusively used for the production of the Heitz Bella Oaks vineyard-designated wines. The 2007 vintage will be the last vintage of this wine from Heitz Cellars. The Booth family has entered into an agreement with Garen and Shari Staglin of Staglin Family Vineyard to produce a Bella Oaks vineyard-designated wine, commencing with the 2011 vintage.

“Our family is pleased and proud that we were able to purchase the historic Bella Oaks Vineyard, "said David Booth, General Partner of Booth Bella Oaks LLC. "We’ve been looking for a long time for the right location and vineyard opportunity to fulfill our interests in spending more time in the Napa Valley and pursuing the dream of making world class wines. This purchase and our partnership with Staglin Family Vineyard will make this possible,” Booth added.

“It is a great honor for us to be able to assume responsibility for the farming and winemaking of the historic Bella Oaks Vineyard and carry forward the traditions started by Barney and Belle Rhodes and the Heitz family," stated Shari and Garen Staglin of Staglin Family Vineyard. "We will be utilizing our winemaking and viticulture team of David Abreu, vineyard manager, Michel Rolland, consulting oenologist, and winemaker Fredrik Johansson to produce a vineyard designated wine from the Bella Oaks vineyard that is the best possible from this land. Replanting with additional varietals, tighter spacing, and soil and drainage amendments are among the opportunities we are considering with the Booth family,” the Staglins added.

“Our long-standing friendship with the Staglin family and our respect for their wines in addition to the fact that the vineyard is adjacent to the Staglin Family Vineyard, made this partnership ideal for us,” said Suzanne Deal Booth. “Our children, Erin and Chandler, will be very active with us in the production of the wines from this property, as well as enjoying the opportunity to spend more time in the beautiful Napa Valley as part-time residents. We’re planning an extensive remodeling of the original house while preserving many of the original elements designed by the Rhodes," said Suzanne.

The first vintage of the Staglin Family Vineyard Bella Oaks wine will be released in October 2014. Anticipated initial case production will be approximately 1200 9 L equivalent cases. The wine will be produced and bottled in the Staglin Family Vineyard 24,000 square foot underground winemaking and barrel storage facility. Inquiries on the wine should be directed to Garen or Shari Staglin at 707 963 3994 or by email to garen.staglin@staglinfamily.com or michele@staglinfamily.com .
