Biltmore Appoints Southern Wine & Spirits As Part of National Expansion

Submitted By: Sam Folsom, October 08, 2010
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2010) – Biltmore Estate Wine Company in North Carolina is undertaking a major program to expand its wine distribution nationally. Biltmore has appointed Southern Wine & Spirits (SWS) as its distributor for Florida, South Carolina, Washington D.C., Maryland and Delaware, and the winery plans to have its wines in all 50 states within five years.

“Having Southern Wine & Spirits as our partner is truly a great opportunity for Biltmore,” said Chuck Whitehead, vice president of sales for Biltmore Estate Wine Company. “We are undertaking an aggressive plan to expand distribution nationally, and this partnership is a significant step in our company’s growth.”

Biltmore Winery, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is the most visited winery in America. Historically the company has sold the majority of its wines directly to consumers who visit the winery and recently, sales of Biltmore Wines in several Southeastern states have surpassed those at the winery. Biltmore currently has distribution in 19 states.

In addition to Southern Wine & Spirits, Biltmore has distribution partnerships with Mutual Distributing (North Carolina), United Distributors (Georgia), Heidelberg Distributing Co. (Ohio and Kentucky) and Glazer’s. Biltmore has just expanded its partnership with Glazer’s to include distribution in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Glazer’s is currently the distributor partner for Biltmore Wines in Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

“We have strong distributor partnerships in some of the top markets in the country,” noted Whitehead. “They have been instrumental in our growth and provide an excellent foundation for us to connect wine consumers with the Biltmore lifestyle.”

Biltmore ranks in the top 1% of the U.S. wine business and produces 170,000 cases of wine annually using fruit from its estate vineyards in North Carolina as well as grapes from partners in other premium winegrowing regions. The wines are currently available at stores and restaurants in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C. and West Virginia, and can be shipped direct to consumers’ homes in 26 states.
