Quivira Vineyards & Winery names Hugh Chappelle winemaker
Healdsburg, Calif. (June 28, 2010) – Highly-regarded Sonoma County winemaker Hugh Chappelle has been named winemaker for Quivira Vineyards & Winery, effective July 1. Chappelle joins Quivira from Lynmar Estate and has more than 20 years of experience making world-class wines in California.
“Hugh is one of California’s most accomplished and thoughtful winemakers, and we’re very pleased to have him at Quivira,” said winery owner Pete Kight. “He has a deep understanding of both modern winemaking techniques and traditional methods, and his artisan approach fits seamlessly with our belief in integrating vineyards and winemaking.”
Chappelle has been director of winemaking at Lynmar Estate in Russian River Valley since 2004. In that role, he oversaw vineyards and winemaking and was responsible for making Lynmar wines that achieved widespread critical acclaim. Prior to joining Lynmar, Chappelle served as winemaker for Flowers Vineyard & Winery on the Sonoma Coast, where he worked from 2000 to 2004. Earlier in his career, he was winemaker for Madrona Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, where he focused on Zinfandel, Rhône, Bordeaux and aromatic white varieties. Chappelle did graduate studies in viticulture and enology at U.C. Davis and has a degree in chemistry from U.C. Santa Cruz.
“Quivira immediately impressed me with their philosophy towards both farming and winemaking, and this position appealed to me on many levels,” noted Chappelle. “Quivira wines are vineyard-driven and Pete Kight and his team are unified in their commitment to this ideal. I was also drawn to their organic and Biodynamic farming practices and their interest in a more elegant expression of their diverse range of terroirs. For me, while it’s a return to my original varietal focus, there is no change whatsoever in my winemaking approach of striving for impeccably balanced wines that speak of their origins.”
Hugh Chappelle replaces Stephen Canter as winemaker at Quivira. Canter is leaving Quivira to take a winery position in Oregon.
Quivira Vineyards & Winery is located in Dry Creek Valley and specializes in Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhône varieties from the winery’s certified Biodynamic® and organic vineyards. Additional information is available at www.quivirawines.com.
Quivira is a family owned winery located in the heart of Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. Proprietors Pete and Terri Kight acquired the winery from original founders Holly and Henry Wendt in 2006. In keeping with Quivira’s strong tradition of sustainability, the Kights’ goal is to maintain a balanced estate producing genuinely world-class wines. Quivira has been a Demeter-certified Biodynamic® and organic winery since 2005. The estate comprises four distinct vineyards within the Dry Creek AVA with 93 acres of vines in total. In addition to Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc, Quivira grows several Rhône varieties including highly rated Grenache and Mourvedre, and a small amount of rare varieties, such as Couniose and Montepulciano. Quivira is guided by a deeply-held principle of careful stewardship of the land and all its creatures. Since 1988 Quivira has been actively engaged in restoring Wine Creek, the Coho salmon and Steelhead trout spawning stream that winds through the center of the estate.
