DUCKHORN WINE COMPANY EXPANDS ITS DECOY PROGRAM
Decoy to benefit from the focus and expertise of Duckhorn Wine Company’s four dedicated winemakers
NAPA VALLEY, Calif. – June 3, 2010 – Beginning with the 2008 vintage, Duckhorn Wine Company is pleased to announce an expanded lineup for its Decoy label. For the past two decades, Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine has been bottled as a single wine supporting Duckhorn Wine Company’s Duckhorn Vineyards brand. Moving forward, Decoy will be produced as supporting brand for the entire Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio, which includes Duckhorn Vineyards, Paraduxx, Goldeneye and Migration. All of the wines in the expanded Decoy program are from premier winegrowing appellations. In addition to the original Decoy Napa Valley Red, the new Decoy by Duckhorn Wine Company lineup will include a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley, a Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley, and a Chardonnay from Sonoma County (debuting with the 2009 vintage), with suggested retail prices ranging from $18 to $25.
Since the inaugural vintage of Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine was produced more than 20 years ago, Decoy has become a sought-after wine in the Duckhorn Wine Company family of wines. Blending fruit from top growers and Duckhorn Wine Company’s own Napa Valley estate vineyards, Decoy has been widely recognized for its high quality and its excellent pricing in the Napa Valley Bordeaux-varietal blend category.
“Expanding Decoy was a natural step for us,” says Duckhorn Wine Company President Alex Ryan, who has been with the company since 1988. “It was also an idea twenty years in the making. We’ve spent decades building our estate program in the Napa and Anderson valleys, because we understand that wine quality always begins with the quality of the fruit. With twelve estate vineyards and long-term access to some of the best grapes, we are now finally able to produce an expanded Decoy lineup at the quality levels people have come to expect from Duckhorn Wine Company. That quality, and the fact that these wines are so attractively priced, make Decoy a great introduction to our portfolio that will bring new consumers to all of our brands. At the same time, Decoy offers longtime customers a fantastic everyday option, with new occasions for consumption. That’s what makes Decoy the everyday wine for the well-informed.”
Several other factors will ensure the quality of the entire Decoy line. Foremost among them is the fact Decoy wines benefit from the focus and expertise of four dedicated winemakers, each of whom has a unique area of specialization. Bill Nancarrow, Duckhorn Wine Company’s executive winemaker – Napa Valley, oversees the crafting of Decoy’s Bordeaux-varietal wines. Paraduxx Winemaker David Marchesi oversees Decoy Zinfandel, Goldeneye Winemaker Zach Rasmuson works alongside Migration Winemaker Neil Bernardi to produce Decoy Pinot, and Decoy Chardonnay is produced by Bernardi.
“This is one of the real benefits of our unique company structure,” says Bill Nancarrow. “As Duckhorn Wine Company has grown, we’ve maintained the integrity of our different brands by establishing individual winery estates, with their own winemakers, and with each dedicated to specific regions and varietals. This focus and specialization has been a crucial factor in the exceptional quality of our core brands, and now it’s a key part of what makes our Decoy lineup so good.”
Because decisions about which lots are used in Decoy are not made until well into the winemaking process, Decoy’s grapes receive the same care in the vineyard, and the same small-lot attention to detail in the winery as every wine in the Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio. This detail-oriented approach positively influences Decoy at every step, from the application of meticulous viticultural and pruning practices to hand sorting and the use of the finest coopers and French oak.
Decoy is produced as a supporting brand for the entire Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio. Duckhorn Wine Company is a collection of small winery estates focused on site-specific wines of distinction. The Duckhorn Wine Company family includes Duckhorn Vineyards, Paraduxx, Goldeneye and Migration. With grapes selected from estate vineyards, as well as a variety of sought-after vineyard sites, each winery is presented with a canvas of lots from which to blend its premium wines.
