The exhibits by the over 6,700 exhibitors from 61 countries and about 300 wine growing regions at ProWein 2018, International Trade Fair for Wines and Spirits, will be complemented by a first rate ancillary program. Some 500 events – including numerous guided tasting sessions, seminars and presentations – will be held at exhibitors’ stands and at the two ProWein Forums. Focal topics will include Champagne & Sparkling Wine, Craft Spirits & Craft Beer, Organic Wines & Biodynamics, Maturation & Potential, Food & Wine Pairings as well as Marketing and Logistics Themes for Retail. The complete ancillary program is available at www.prowein.com. ProWein will take place from March 18 - 20, 2018 at the fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The well-attended ProWein Forums are important information events for the trade visitors and were initiated to enable exhibitors to showcase various themes to a larger number of attendees. In 2018, numerous events will be held in the Forums in Halls 10 and 13.
In their guided tastings the ProWein trend scouts Stuart Pigott and Paula Sidore will offer an overview of international wine trends. As part of the Trend Hour on March 19 and 20 (from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at the ProWein Forum in Hall 10) they will report on the new freshness in wine, the success of natural wines, viticulture in the new north, regionality in taste and style as well as the emerging wine nation of China.
A special feature at ProWein 2018 will be the Champagne Lounge with 40 Champagne houses and more than 150 brands. Guided Champagne tastings will also be held at Falstaff, Vinum and publishing house Meininger Verlag. At the stand of Sud de France Développement sparkling delights from Limoux will be available for tasting. The Comité de Champagne will present the latest developments in the field during their annual press conference at the trade fair (March 19 at 12:00 pm at the ProWein Forum in Hall 10).
German “winzersekt” (vintners’ vintage varietal sparkling wine) with or without 36 months’ yeast fermentation – as well as the Pet Nats offering – can be found at the events taking place at the stands of Frankenwein-Frankenland, Rheinhessenwein, the German Wine Institute (Deutsches Weininstitut – DWI), Falstaff and Vinum.
Italians at the Vinum stand will present spumante from Lake Garda and the Consorzio per la Tutela del Franciacorta with the different Franciacorta types as Italy’s best sparkling wines. At their tasting, the DE.S.A. (German Sommelier Association) will pick up the Italian theme on the first day of ProWein with bottle-fermented sparkling wines from Italian winemakers, Italian delicatessen, oysters and caviar.
Information on Spanish Cava will be presented at Meininger Verlag while at the stand of Österreich Wein Marketing, the sparkling wine Sekt g. U. (Austrian sparkling wine with Protected Designation of Origin) will be available and Demeter e. V. will offer top biodynamic “bubbly” from Germany and France. IBRAVIN Wines of Brazil will showcase their semi-sparkling offerings.
Craft Spirits and Craft Beer
Dedicated to the trendy Craft theme will be the newly designed special show “same but different” in Hall 7.0. Over 70 exhibitors will showcase Craft Spirits, Craft Beer and Cider. The most important types of craft beer will be presented by Meininger Verlag at their stand in guided tastings. In the “same but different” area the unique trend drinks can be tasted while the Romanian Wine Promotion Association will feature a Craft Beer Zone as well as a competition.
Scandinavian hygge lifestyle drinks can be experienced at Meininger Verlag in the Fizzz Lounge. Insights into the harmonious balance of a cocktail will be supplied by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) at their stand. The distillery Feinbrennerei Sasse Korn will highlight Korn schnapps and aperitifs. Education about Hungarian Pálinka fruit brandies will be provided for the first time by the AMC Agricultural Marketing Center at the ProWein Forum in Hall 10.
“Organic” wines will also be an important topic at ProWein 2018. Based on market developments it will be debated at the Demeter booth whether organic wine is a product for the elite or a broader audience. The organic wine association Ecovin Bundesverband Ökologischer Weinbau e.V will inform about organic wine trends. Bioland LV Rheinland-Pfalz will address the question whether organic wine cultivation will help wine retail to raise its profile. Experts at Falstaff will give talks on the future of organic wine on an international level while Spanish supplier Viñedos Emiliana will inform about its 20 years experience with organic and biodynamic wine. The Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) will provide insights into the organic movement in Bordeaux. The Rhône Valley Vineyards Inter Rhône Interprofessionel des Vins A.O.C will have guided organic wine tasting at its booth. Wine Australia will also present organic and biodynamic wines while Meininger Verlag will provide information on the development of organic wines in Chile.
Newcomer Japan: Sake & Koshu Wines
This year’s ProWein will for the first time feature a joint stand from Japan (Hall 9) focusing on the topic of sake. In addition, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) will provide interesting sake facts - from basics and food pairings to traditional and modern production methods. Messe Düsseldorf Japan will organize a guided tasting session of award-winning Japanese koshu wines.
Maturation, Storage Potential & Time
Tasting sessions at ProWein will include rare wines. DE.S.A. (German Sommelier Association) will present a number of Lanson Champagnes from vintages between 2002 and 1989 alongside a Custoza vertical tasting from 60 years of Monte del Frá as well as Lugana discoveries from the last 50 years. The Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini Valpolicella will have a tasting session with vintage Amarone della Valpolicella Doc. Frankenwein will place a young and aged Silvaner side by side. Puklavec Family Wines will treat visitors to an archive wine tasting featuring a 1969 Weißburgunder and a 1971 Furmint. The CVRA, Comissao Vitivinicola Regional Alentejana will illustrate why some wines need more time than others using the example of wines that are over ten years old.
Marketing, Sales, Export & Logistics
Speakers from ViniPortugal – Wines of Portugal Association and the PAR marketing will discuss tasting abilities, wine quality assessment, wine list compilation and well as range design. Experts from Wein+Markt Fachverlag Dr. Fraund will lecture about the future of retail in the ProWein Forum in Hall 13. Online wine sales will be addressed by experts from Dee-Wine/Digital.Wine.Business at their stand. Help with the hard to pronounce grape varieties from Portugal will be provided at the stand of the CVRA, Comissao Vitivinicola Regional Alentejana. Albatrans S.p.A., USA Wine West and New Zealand Winegrowers will offer information on international sales concerning legal requirements, logistics questions, quality assurance during transportation and transport insurance as well as targeted marketing.
