GROUPE CHARLOIS UNITES WITH TONNELLERIE SAURY TO FORM THE WORLD'S LARGEST, FULL SERVICE COOPERAGE.
NAPA, MARCH 25, 2010-/Tonnellerie Saury and Groupe Charlois have joined forces to create the world’s first cooperage group integrating and controlling the entire production chain from start to finish. Groupe Charlois can now guarantee their clients receive the highest quality barrels from the most environmentally sustainable resources available while maintaining the high standards their clients have come to expect.
The new group now includes the renowned brands: Saury, Leroi, Ermitage and Berthomieu. The group can produce 7,800 m3 of staves from the most prestigious forests in France and will sell 75,000 French oak barrels in the global market. All barrels pass a multi-point TCA/TBA testing program and remain fully compliant with PEFC, ISO 9001, HACCP and ISO14000 certifications. These certifications provide proof the group controls vertical traceability, from the raw material to the delivered barrel, while setting the standard in the industry for quality and safety. Each brand will continue to operate independently keeping its own identity in terms of wood selection, seasoning, manufacturing process, production personnel, and distribution network.
“Our goal is to respect and preserve the work of the winemaker, “said Georges Milcan, Commercial Director, Groupe Charlois. “Our clientele represent the most respected brands in the global wine industry and our goal is to respond to their individual needs and requirements with our four individual brands. Since each brand has a distinctive production process, they are unique, yet complementary in terms of taste profile”.
Prior to the merger in December, 2009, the Groupe Charlois sold 70% of their stave production to the most prestigious cooperages in France. The new group will now reserve 100% of its production for its own brands. In addition, the company maximizes the value of the raw materials and decreases waste, by sending wood not suitable for barrel production to its saw mill for the manufacturing of wood pallets, railroad ties and other products. “The purchase of the saw mill was critical to our goal of becoming a greener company. The barrel process uses less than 50% of the wood; our saw mill effectively eliminates waste and utilizes 100% of the log. Combined with our recent PEFC certification, (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), our clients can be assured we are conducting our business in an environmentally and socially responsible way,” said Milcan.
