San Luis Obispo, CA – August 3, 2016 – Family-owned and operated Sextant Wines announced today that Michael Fay, formerly of Duckhorn Wine Company in Napa Valley, CA, will join their staff as lead winemaker. In this role, Fay will direct production joining proprietor Craig Stoller at the helm of Sextant’s winemaking operations. “Michael shares our philosophy on creating high quality, vineyard-inspired boutique wines,” notes Stoller. “He brings valuable experience and perspective to our vineyards and cellar.”
Born in Vicenza, Italy and raised in California, Fay discovered a passion for winemaking while studying forestry management. “I wanted to cultivate a relationship with nature,” Fay admits, “but my growing love for Pinot made me realize I didn’t want to make paper—I wanted to make wine.” Working most recently as winemaker for Duckhorn’s Goldeneye label, he is no stranger to the Central Coast. A graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Fay has worked for Cambria Estate, Firestone Vineyards, and Los Alisos Wines. And his winemaking philosophy epitomizes the command of a tenured visionary: “My goal isn’t to speak for the wines, but to let the wines speak for themselves.”
With over 16 years of experience, Fay has mastered his craft by making small lot, site-specific wines. His emphasis on clonal selections complements the roots on which Sextant was formed; from day one, the highest quality ENTAV-INRA clones of France have set the standard in their vineyards. The winery is also known for carefully selecting rootstocks, matching appropriate varieties with the terroir of their vineyards to maximize wine quality.
