Varietal Winners & Losers: 1.5L Pinot On Top, All Syrah On Bottom

Sauvignon Blanc in 1.5-liter bottles topped the list of varietal sales winners with a 20.4 percent dollar sales increase for the four-week period ending Feb. 22. according to data from Information Resources Inc. (IRI) with additional analysis from Wine Industry Insight.

Even more impressively, Sauv Blanc showed a 25.1 percent increase for the 52-week period.

Red blends/meritage posted an overall four-week period gain of 14.4 percent. The performance was mixed with 750-ml bottles gaining 19.6 percent while the 1.5-liter bottles lost 1.5 percent.

SYRAH BIGGEST LOSER IN ALL SIZES

Syrah/Shiraz of all container sizes brought up the bottom of the sales performance list with 1.5-liter bottles dropping 7 percent for the four-week period ending Feb. 22. 750-ml Syrahs dropped 4.8 percent and overall sizes, down 4.1 percent

MIXED PERFORMANCE FOR POPULAR VARIETALS

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and other popular varietals posted  performances that were scattered about the charts.

Winery Finds That Refill Beats Recycle

 Like millions of other Americans, residents of Sandpoint, Idaho sort their recyclable waste for curbside pickup. But  there is no market for the recycled glass, the city mixes the glass back into solid waste  and disposes it at a landfill in Eastern Oregon.

Julie Meyer, Co-Proprietor of Pend d’Oreille Winery in Sandpoint  says this frustrated her and her staff so much that they decided that if they and theis customers couldn’t recycle the bottles, then they should refill them.

As a result, they produced 1.5 liter bottles with a generic silk screened label of their popular Bistro Rouge Red Table Wine.  Once purchased, the clients clean their own bottle and bring it back to the winery for a refill. And, To keep the label from deteriorating over time, the winery had a local local commercial printer, Litehouse Custom Printing , print the label directly on the bottles. 

Because it is a generic label the blend can change. Winemaker and Co-Proprtetor Steve Meyer said he loves the freedom to create wines that are fun to blend, market and enjoy with the public.

GENERIC LABEL, BONDED REFILL COMPLIES WITH TTB COLA

Meyer told Wine Industry Insight that, “Because we bottle the wine here on our bonded premise, our bottling statement remains technically correct.  This bottle carries a TTB approved COLA that is very generic.  It is labeled Red Table Wine which gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility in our blending and creative effort.”

CUSTOMERS LIKE THE CONCEPT

“Clients who we used to see occasionally are coming in weekly with a couple of bottles,” Meyer said. “And while they are in, they will often take the opportunity to have a glass of wine, taste something new or browse our gift shop.  The really fun part is when customers buy a second bottle so that they don’t have to make such frequent trips to the Winery. Our clients are very pleased with the project, and we are cementing an already strong bond with our community.”


Gary Ramona New VP of Marketing and Sales At Antigal Winery

Doral, FL, April 2, 2009 Veteran winery executive Gary Ramona has been named Vice-President of Marketing and Sales for Argentina’s Antigal Winery & Estates, prominent Mendoza producer with headquarters here. Antigal president Horacio Peiro said, “We’re extremely pleased to have Gary join our family winery and work with us in building our international fine wine company.”

Napa Valley-based Ramona, who spent decades working with Bronco Wine Company and Robert Mondavi Winery, said, “This is a new exciting opportunity with a growing, quality-focused winery. I have the greatest respect for the Franzia family and appreciate their support over the years.”

Antigal Winery & Estates is based near the city of Mendoza, where a newly-refurbished winery and extensive new vineyards focus on the Malbec varietal. An expanded marketing and distribution program is expected in the near future.


5th Circuit Appeals Court Hears Texas Direct Shipping Law

The Specialty Wine Retailers Association’s (SWRA) appeal of a direct shipping case in Texas was heard March 31 by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, according to the SWRA.

In that case — Siesta Village Market v. Perry — U.S. Federal District Judge Sidney Fitzwater found the Texas direct-shipping law unconstitutional. However, Fitzwater went on to create his own a judicial solution rather than directing the Texas legislature to fix the problem.

The SWRA appeal argues that Fitzwater’s actions were improper and illegal. Their position and the history of the case is outlined in their latest newsletter.
