TODAY'S FEATURED WINE
Chrysalis Vineyards: Norton: Virginia: : 2012: United KingdomUnited States
A few weeks back, I read an article from a relatively prominent wine writer referring to Zinfandel as the only truly American grape. I found that a bit shocking because Zinfandel has its roots, literally, in Europe.
The only truly American grape is Norton.
And like most Americans, it has a hard time proving its family lineage what with the possibility of a little European that may have sneaked into the genetic structure.
Lab tests, however, show Norton’s solid native American Vitis aestivalis streak.
A really fine exemplar of American Norton is the 2012 Barrel Select from Chrysalis Vineyards of Middleburg, VA.
Rhone lovers will find the overall orchestral score very familiar with the addition of some unique instruments adding pleasant hints of dill and walnuts.
$29 And well worth a unique taste of an American original.
For winery tasting samples, gifts from friends or family or samplings at a party or event, review it truthfully, but only if I like it. If I have paid my own very-hard-earned money on a bottle, the gloves are off and it gets what it deserves ... whether perfect or puerile.
